sym. is an evening-length dance work by Pittsburgh-based choreographer Staycee Pearl and DJ/sound designer Soy Sos, in collaboration with acclaimed visual artist Barbara Weissberger. sym. employs dynamic movement infused with live experimental sound and a rich visual experience to delve into the writings of esteemed African-American science fiction novelist Octavia Butler. The multidisciplinary ensemble explores Butler’s vampire-themed novel Fledgling, to dig deeper into a recurring theme in her work: symbiosis.
