Detour: 2023 Studio Arts Student Exhibition

University Art Gallery, University of Pittsburgh

March 31-April 29, 2023

The faculty and staff of the Department of Studio Arts are pleased to present the creative work of the 2023 Studio Arts graduates, as well as exceptional works selected by faculty from students in department courses.

Detour is a culminating event for our graduates, many of whom enrolled in the university in the fall of 2019, anticipating a perfectly normal college experience. Whatever “normal” college experience might have been imagined, these seniors have navigated uncertainty and upheaval both near and far, honing their skills as artists, makers, and thinkers, with aplomb. The breadth of their work explores their influences with compelling richness and joy, spanning the natural world and urban ruins, science and poetry, the personal and the political. These seniors have each cultivated a powerful voice in and through their accomplished work while also forming a tightly woven community, together.

The department offers best wishes in celebrating our graduates in their many creative and cross-disciplinary achievements – we are so proud for you! For our continuing students, we look forward to your ongoing creative work and energy in the studios in the years ahead.

Detour is the 2023 Studio Arts Student Exhibition that can be viewed both in person and virtually. The work of the seniors will be published in a catalogue available in the holdings of the Frick Fine Arts Library later this spring. Exhibiting artists with exceptional works selected by faculty: Zekai Chen, Sydney Cristofori, Len Franz, Coco Kambayashi, August Korb, Maggie Knox, Kathryn Larrimer, Anna Tillie Plazek, Sarah Schoenberger, Emily Xu, and Casey Yin

This exhibition is produced by the Studio Arts Senior Exhibition course with critical support from department faculty. Presented by the University Art Gallery, the department extends appreciation to Sylvia Rhor Samaniego and Janina López. Hannah Powell, Amanda Raczkowski, and Karoline Swiontek continually offer unwavering administrative support – thank you! Appreciation also to Max Glider, Isis Duncan, and Kyle Fitch of the University Center for Teaching and Learning for the creation of the exhibition’s virtual tour.
