"Artistic License"

The Office of Public Art announces the launch of the Sift exhibition Artistic License, which featuring work by Ivette Spradlin and Lenore Thomas.

For their second collaboration, Ivette Spradlin and Lenore Thomas have come together to create unique, mixed media photograph prints based on buffs (painted out graffiti on buildings). Unintentional compositions on the sides of the buildings inspire Spradlin’s photographs and create the initial canvas for Thomas to create.

Through exploring the aesthetics of the marks made by painting the buffs, they are also celebrating what can no longer be seen, reminding us that the effort put into covering up graffiti often calls more attention to the graffiti then the graffiti itself ever did.

To celebrate the exhibition Artistic License, a reception will be held on Tuesday, September 18, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM on the 7th Floor of the GPAC Building (810 Penn Avenue). The evening will include remarks by José Carlos Diaz, and provide an opportunity for others to learn about future Sift exhibitions.
