An Nguyen

Biography
An Nguyen is an artist and designer who was born in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and raised in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Ever since she was a child, art has been an outlet through which An expresses her emotions and explores her interests. Often exploring subjects such as mental illness, death, and the supernatural, An's work draws inspiration and builds narratives from the macabre, strange, and occult. An currently resides in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She attends the University of Pittsburgh and is pursuing a BS in Digital Narrative & Interactive Design with an Online Media concentration, as well as a BA in Studio Arts. In addition to attending school, An works part-time as a visual designer. After school, An plans to continue working in design and hopes to also pursue an independent art practice. In her free time, she can usually be found painting in her home studio, skateboarding, or seeking out the next local eatery.

Artist Statement
As an interdisciplinary artist, my creative works branch across a variety of media but meet at a common objective: to arouse a reflection of the human experience. Exploring subjects such as mental illness, death, and the supernatural, my art draws inspiration and builds narratives from the macabre, strange, and occult. Ever since I was a small child, creating has served as a means of making sense of and connecting with the world around me. The meditative process of making art forces me to slow down and reflect upon my own lived experiences. Human physiology along with the natural order of life and death have always been of particular interest to me, and many of my works incorporate various parts of the human body: human faces, skulls, eyes, and hands are recurring subjects among my work. A lifelong introvert, artmaking serves as an outlet for my emotions and allows me to comfortably process human experiences in my own time.
