Department of Studio Arts Teaching Associate Professor Sean P. Morrissey has three works on view in Declaring America: 1776 and Beyond, a major exhibition at The New York Public Library’s Stephen A. Schwarzman Building in New York City, on view June 15, 2026 – January 10, 2027.
Organized in conjunction with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, the exhibition spans multiple galleries and considers the American Revolution from 1776 to the present through historical documents, maps, protest materials, and contemporary art. Morrissey’s work is included in Art as Declaration, a section featuring 39 works that examine how artists have engaged with and reimagined the nation’s founding ideas.
The three prints, held in The New York Public Library’s permanent collection, are part of Morrissey’s practice that investigates land, property, architecture, and the built environment. Across printmaking, installation, and artist publications, their work examines how development, housing, and design norms organize the lived environment and shape everyday life.
Art as Declaration was reviewed in a New York Times Critic’s Pick by Blake Gopnik, “Potent Art Lets ‘We, the People’ Reflect on America’s Past and Present,” published July 2, 2026.
