Requirements
for Non-Majors

Department of Studio Arts foundation courses carry no prerequisites and are open to non-art majors.

If you are not interested in pursuing a major in Studio Arts but would like to explore the basics of design, painting, sculpture, and drawing, you may want to consider a minor in Studio Arts. For those curious about art practice, the Department encourages you to consider one of its courses as a way to fulfill the School of Arts and Sciences general education requirements.

The Studio Arts minor requires completion of the four foundation courses and any three-credit History of Art and Architecture course, for a total of 15 credits.

Required Studio Arts foundation courses for the Studio Arts minor:

A Studio Arts “area of related study” requires 12 credits. A student may elect one of the following options: 12 credits by completing the four foundation courses or 12 credits within a specific discipline. Non-majors may take advanced courses when offered, but only if they have fulfilled the prerequisites, or by departmental permission.

“I found the classes I took (all foundations) to be really engaging, and even though they were lower-level courses, they helped me to develop my understanding of art 'out there' as well as perception of myself as an artist. I have taken art classes and pursued art on my own my whole life, but I had never been really challenged by art in the way I was while taking SA classes. And I really appreciated that—it shows that the department takes art seriously, which is something that is often hard to come by.”
