Michael Morrill at The Yard

Straights and Curves brings together works from Morrill’s recent series Déjà vu Blue along with pieces from an earlier series, which explore the relationship between straight lines and curves in a limited palette that creates light and shadow through transparency and impasto as opposed to reflectivity and gilding. The visual language of his work appears almost as a pattern of straight lines and curves that are repetitive like vibrations, rolls of film negatives, or a visual Morse code. The delicate subtleties in Morrill’s work show a highly sophisticated technique of painting, while his combination of fluidity and geometry also appeals to our sense of symmetry and variation in a neatly organized chaos.
