Lenore Thomas - "Poetics of Place"

May 2 - 31, 2013

The exhibition will present a survey of work by Lenore Thomas, whose keen perception and personal observation is the foundation of her abstract paintings and mixed media prints. Thomas presents several bodies of work that reverberate with an ambiguous sense of space, scale, distance and depth. The artist’s use of basic shapes, background pattern, and flat color create unique environments marked by playful tension and pleasantly distorted perspectives. In her more recent work, Thomas creates pattern with a mathematical diagram of a hepteract, which represents three-dimensional images of a seven cube. While this pattern may be appreciated by some as purely decorative, it also reveals complex geometric representations of volume and space.

Poetics of Place will trace the artist’s development of process and concept through works from 2008 to present, with an emphasis on the narrative created through her noteworthy titles. The carefully selected titles for each work have become an essential part of Thomas’ artistic process, as the text creates another level of meaning and non-literal reference to the locations which inspired the works in the first place. Viewers will delight in works such as I am an hour ahead of being more awesome than you, Its like a carousel of cupcakes, or By the way this place is a creephole.

Gallery hours are Monday - Friday, 11am - 5pm and by appointment.
